COMING TO KNOW THE CHARACTER OF GOD
How well do we really know and trust God?
God is a God of love. (1 John 4)
The more I know God, the more I like myself.
God is powerful. If we knew this more deeply, we would trust our lives to Him on a deeper level. We wouldn’t be so fearful.
Knowing God more deeply is like getting to know anyone. We have to spend a lot of time with them, talking and listening and sharing our most inward thoughts and feelings.
It just takes moments, here and there, throughout the day. Look heavenward and say, “Help,” or say, “Thank you”. Converse all day long. It feels so good to talk to Him.
Gratitude is a powerful way to come closer to God. Look for evidence every day, everywhere. Give Him credit for every single good thing in life.
I need God, every day. To need Him feels sweet to me.
Another way to get to know God on a deeper level, is to study His words in the scriptures. Look for His love and power. Look for what is important to Him.
We are important to Him! Talk to Him. Pour your heart out. Invite Him into every area of life.
When a child is learning to walk, he doesn’t think about the mechanics of walking, such as raising a foot and moving it forward and setting it down carefully. A child just keeps his eye on the loving, encouraging parent across the room. When the child falls, the parent doesn’t say, “Oh drat! you fell again!” The parent claps! Compare that to the Lord. He is pleased even with faltering effort.
We don’t have to stress about doing everything perfectly. We can keep our eye on the loving Parent up in Heaven, and we will get there! In our mind’s eye, visual Him smiling at us.
For those who have a fear of God, try opening the door a crack and just peek at Him. Think about the possibility of approaching Him.
For those who feel that God is not listening, perhaps we are not listening to Him. We can get on our knees and say nothing. Just look at Him. Imagine Him smiling at us. Be still to know God. Breathe and look and listen.
Decide if you want Him in your life or not. Be decisive!
“Of course I want to know Him. Of course He knows me. Of course He loves me. Of course He has the power to help me. Of course I choose to wait upon His timing.”
God is a God of love and power. We can choose to look for evidence of this.
As we do this, every area of our life improves; relationships, health, decisions, peace, chores, and so forth.
Life is so rich when we connect with God on a deeper level. This starts with understanding His character, truly seeing and feeling His love and power.
