Worried That You Won’t Know the Difference Between Your Thoughts and God’s Voice?
Trust and Practice are Required.
Most of us can’t play Bach or Beethoven on the piano without a piano teacher and lots of practice. Did you notice that I said “lots”?
Of course you want to do God’s will.
Or maybe you want to want to do His will.
You might be worried that you won’t know what His will is in certain instances. You might be very worried about “getting it right”. What are you afraid will happen if you don’t get it right?
God is infinitely patient and loving. Do what it takes to know His character on a deeper level. The New Testament says, “God is love”.
First notice all the evidence of God’s love, wisdom and strength. Slow your life down a little bit so you can notice the song of a bird, a child’s smile or the little “coincidences” that happen.
Talk to Him. Ask Him to help you notice. This will help you develop greater trust in Him.
Trust Him. It’s easier to trust someone you spend time with. (What if we spent all day, every day with Him? What if we involved Him in everything we do, or approach the possibility.)
Practice trusting Him.
You say, “I want to hear Him but I don’t trust myself to know the difference between my thoughts and His whisperings”. Did you notice that I said “whisperings”? We need to quiet our lives enough to hear the still small voice.
If you want to learn the piano you need to sit still on the piano bench. You need to focus on the piano teacher.
Instead of focusing on trusting yourself, focus on trusting Him.
If you want to know the difference between your thoughts and His voice, you need to practice listening and acting upon His guidance. If it doesn’t sound right, then you know you played the wrong note. Try again.
Don’t try to play the piece faster than you are able. Slow down a little.
Have you noticed that the words “slow down” keep coming up?
Take a breath. Eliminate some distractions. You don’t have to learn all the instruments in the orchestra, just the one you and God agreed to. Talk to Him about which instrument to learn.
Practice hearing the Piano Teacher. Practice following the Piano Teacher’s guidance.
Practice.
As you practice, you will make mistakes. The Piano Teacher doesn’t yell at you. Don’t yell at yourself.
Just listen, trust and practice
Your music and your life will get increasing more challenging. This is exciting!
You don’t want to play the simple tunes over and over for years and years. That’s not very interesting. As your music and your life become more challenging, they also become more interesting and more beautiful.
Learning the piano is fun. Learning to hear and follow God’s voice is fun. Don’t worry about mistakes. The Piano Teacher knows you will make mistakes.
Trust Him and keep practicing.
